Care, whether pastoral or diaconal implies dealing with suffering. This confronts parties involved in this care with asymmetry and differences in power and dependency, with implications for the sense of identity, dignity and integrity of all parties.
In this course we will explore the concepts of dignity and identity from the perspective of black theologians. From their experiences with slavery and colonialism, black theologians have developped theological understandings of suffering and how to deal with it.
We will deal with questions on the contextuality ánd inclusiveness of theology and care practices and reflect on asymmetry and differences within relations of care.

We will read contributions of black theologians from the United States, the UK and Africa against their historical backgrounds. We will then analyze specific practices of care in the field of Hiv/Aids and migration. A fieldtrip will be taken to a church-related organization specialized in the care for undocumented migrants (INLIA). We will receive guests from a faith-based organization for spiritual care for migrants with Hiv (ShivA).
Students will prepare summaries of the theoretical articles for discussion in class, present observations and reflections on either INLIA or ShivA and write a final paper in which they analyze a specific practice and formulate their own theological perspective on care practices with regard to identity and dignity, based on literature and experiences in the field.
